Family Beach Vacation: Tips for Travel With Kids

Summer is the perfect time to take the kids to the beach for a vacation. If you are looking for a family-oriented beach resort, there are plenty to choose from in most coastal U.S. and Canadian towns, and with a little planning you can find one to suit your family and your budget.

Obviously you will be looking for a beach resort that is kid-friendly, and possibly even pet-friendly. While most of this information is available online, you may also wish to call your choice of hotel or motel directly to be sure, and also to find out if there are any catches (maximum four people to a room, for instance) or extra fees (some poplar areas such as Miami and San Diego charge resort fees, parking fees, etc.).

Family Nature

Ideally, you'll find a great beach resort that caters to kids and may even offer planned activities and programs. If you're going somewhere a little more exotic such as Bahamas or the Caribbean, you'll find many all-inclusive resorts that are wonderful for kids, such as the Beaches resort family.

Family Beach Vacation: Tips for Travel With Kids

To make the most of your beach family resort vacation, here are some tips. Look for resorts that include a lot of extras in the price, such as:

  • A premium location directly on the beach, or complimentary shuttle to a nearby safe and clean beach

  • Activities geared towards your kids' age/s. Sports, kids' clubs, lessons and other fun activities are available at better family beach resorts.

  • Extras such as beach towels, beach and water toys, umbrellas and lounge chairs, etc.. At adults-only hotels these are often at a premium, but for travel with kids you'll want to have as many amenities as possible included in your price, or things will quickly get expensive.

  • Multiple pool areas and possibly special water features like lazy rivers and waterslides

  • Food - many resorts include breakfast or even discounts toward food. It doesn't hurt to ask for these at check-in even if it's not listed as included.

  • Babysitting, especially for evenings, if the adults may wish to have a little grown-up time. Some resorts offer daycare or nannies, or can suggest options.

  • Restaurants and/or venues that cater to kids' tastes, with basics like hotdogs, mac'n'cheese and ice cream. You may also want to sour a local grocery store to pick up healthier items such as fruits and vegetables and drinks cheaply. Look at sites like Tripadvisor for consumer reviews.

  • Suites or room styles made for families, with plenty of space, sleeping room and possibly adjoining doors. Some offer extra cots or pull-out couches to accommodate more kids.

  • Investigate the safety precautions (lifeguard on duty? first aid nearby?) and layout of the resort (are there lots of jagged steps and rocks or is it flat and easy to navigate?). Some destinations are just naturally far more kid-friendly than others.

One further note on the type of beach; different types of beaches may be more suitable for different age groups, eg. teens might love large waves and slightly rougher water for learning to surf, sail or windsurf. Small children and toddlers may require calmer waters. Have a great time on your family beach vacation, and remember to wear sunscreen!

Six Good Reasons to Take a Family Vacation

When I was young, family vacations with my parents consisted of driving for a week from place to place in a hot stifling car. My parents had the knack of picking the hottest week of the summer to do so. In spite of that, we still had fun, managed to find interesting sites to explore and those are the memories that I still have.

I discovered the joy of travel to far reaching destinations on my own by the time I turned 18. Jumping on a plane and heading off to Brazil, Europe or cruising the Caribbean, has turned into a life long passion my whole family now enjoys with me.

Family Nature

Family vacations have evolved over the years. There have never been more choices, more variety and more options available for family vacations as there is today. Especially since 9/11, the focus on family and community and played a strong role in our society. The travel industry has noticed and has geared up for families. From all-inclusive vacation packages and cruises, which are equipped with kids clubs and special activities; to resorts that supply a nanny for your stay, it's never been a better time for families to travel.

Six Good Reasons to Take a Family Vacation

Still not sure? Here are just a few of the benefits of taking a family vacation:

1. The family that plays together, stays together.....

It is a time to get away from it all. Away from work, the phone calls, the kid's activities, the daily to do list. This is a great opportunity to spend time as a family and get to know each other. Go for a hike, build a sandcastle, explore a museum. There is more time to talk and spend time together without the daily distractions.

2. Teach your children well....

Travel is an excellent learning tool for kids. They can have the opportunity to learn about things first hand they may have learned in school, read about or saw on TV. Any destination can offer this learning experience whether it is a few hours drive away from you home or in Europe. Family vacations will teach children about different cultures, food, history, geography, climate, environment and so much more. The best part is that it's way more fun for them then learning it through homework!

3. New experiences they will never forget.....

Family vacations provide a whole new venue for experiences that your kids never would have had otherwise. We took a family cruise last winter, and it was my 9-year-old son's first cruise. We told him all about the ship and showed him pictures but I don't think he could quite grasp what it was really going to be like. We landed in Fort Lauderdale and as we were driving to the port, we could see our ship in the distance. He was excited but still very nonchalant. Once we got to the port and pulled up alongside the ship, he looked up and up and up at the enormous ship, his mouth dropped open and he gasped in amazement. That reaction was worth the price of the whole trip and is something I know our family will always remember.

4. Life is an adventure, especially on vacation....

Even if you are not particularly brave there are still many ways to experience the adventures that lie in every corner of our planet. It may be as simple as going to the zoo at your destination and seeing the animals that are local to that habitat or taking a jungle tour though the Amazon. There is so much to see and do, pick the adventures that appeal to your family and do them together.

5. You kids won't be kids forever....

Doesn't seem like yesterday that the teenager that just borrowed your car, was in diapers and day-care? Most parents agree that time seems to fly by quickly and those babies are grown before you know it. There will come a time that your children will have lives of their own and sad as it may seem, spending time with Mom and Dad will not be anywhere near the top of their list. Take the time for a family vacation while they still want your company.

6. Time to kick back and relax......

Now this part is important. One of the main reasons to take a vacation is to get some rest and recharge. It is important for everyone so don't over do it. Try and schedule an active day followed by a more relaxing day. It's hard to do in some destinations where there is so much to see and do like Disney World, but trust me. The kids will be less tired and cranky and it will give you a reason to come back to the destination again!

I know this all sounds so good, it makes you want to book that trip you've been putting off doesn't it? Well, I will add in a dose of reality here and include a few negatives. There are some natural stresses to travelling. Planes get delayed, kids get cranky, families can have too much of a good thing and get on each other's nerves. The list can go on, but don't let that discourage you, the advantages are too numerous to ignore.

So whether you choose to pack the kids in the car or fly to more exotic destinations, the benefits are the same. As far as memories go, we tend to remember the good things; the time spent together as a family, the new things that were discovered, the new friends we made, the places we saw. This is what your children will remember and, the fact that you were there with them to enjoy it.

Sculptured Rocks Natural Area in New Hampshire - A Great Vacation and Travel Destination

Those visiting New Hampshire must take the time to check out the Sculptured Rocks Natural Area. This is an amazing example of God's handiwork and it is located in Groton between Routes 3A ad 118.

When the last ice age was drawing to an end the Cockermouth River made a narrow canyon as it traveled to Newfound lake. Grains of sand in the current carved the walls of the canyon into amazing shapes. The resulting landscape is bizarre and out of this world. Should you dare to wade in the water you will want to ensure you are a strong swimmer and climber. Those who stay on the shore will enjoy viewing the landscape and simply walking around, taking photos, and even picnicking. The area is open to the public free of charge and it spans more than 272 acres.

Family Nature

The best way to truly enjoy the Sculpture Rocks Natural Area is to have the entire family dress in hiking gear and great shoes. Then, pack the necessities in packs along with a great picnic. Then take the family out for a hike to see the sculptured rocks. You will have a blast trying to figure out what each carving looks like and you will be amazed at how realistic some of them are. Play guessing games as you explore the area and just have fun. Make sure you take lots of photos to include in your photo album because the folks back home won't believe how amazing the Sculptured Rocks Natural Area truly is. Another great thing about visiting the area with the whole family is that it is free of charge so you can have an enjoyable day without spending a lot of money. Keeping Vacation Homes in the Family

Now that autumn has officially arrived, many people have spent fond memories of visits with their family in a vacation property. Perhaps you own a vacation property in Michigan along the water or at Eagle Ridge in Galena on the golf course. Wherever the property is located, one important question is how to keep the vacation home in the family after you have passed on.

All vacation homes require maintenance from painting, sealcoating decks, replacing HVAC units, replacing roofs and on and on. If you have a number of children, how will they determine who will pay for these items? How will they decide which child can use the residence and when? Can your family even agree on decisions of this nature once you are gone?

One of the first things to do is to talk with your adult children about whether they wish to have the vacation home stay in the family. Many times you may assume that the children who enjoy the use of the home while you are there will want the responsibility of maintaining the residence and paying the real estate taxes and other expenses on the property. This may be an incorrect assumption, as your children may be raising their own children and have inadequate time or resources to even use the vacation residence. You may be surprised with the answers that you receive from your family.

If you find that your children do not want to keep the house in the family, you may wish to sell the property when the real estate market improves. If, however, you find that your children really enjoy the property and intend to use it with their families, then there are choices of what to do with the property. For instance, you can transfer your interest into a limited liability company, which will protect your family from a lawsuit if someone slips and falls on that property. It may also provide some level of asset protection.

If you decide to use the limited liability company, you should have rules in the form of an operating agreement that will indicate how decisions will be made with respect to the property, what to do in the event that the property requires maintenance, when additional funds may be needed for the property, when the property should be sold, who will be the manager of the property, to name a few. These are all important decisions that will hopefully keep the family from disputes when you are no longer around to settle them.

In addition, to include your family in the limited liability company, you will need to make gifts of part of your interest in such company over time. Under current tax law, you may make gifts of $12,000 per person per year ($24,000 if your spouse joins in the gift) before using some of your lifetime exemption amount. You will need to consult with your tax professional or estate planning attorney to decide what is appropriate in the way of a gift to your family members.

There are a number of other ways to handle the transfer of the vacation residence to the next generation and keep it in the family, such as a qualified personal residence trust, a cost-sharing arrangement or a partnership. Whatever way you may choose, it is best for you to be the one making the decision during your lifetime to minimize friction among your children about the use and care of this vacation residence.

A Family Vacation Nightmare

The family had enjoyed a few days of a beach resort holiday in Thailand when the husband suggested that they go off on a jungle experience, organized by one of the trekking and adventure tour operators. His wife was not enthusiastic but decided to go along with the proposal because she knew that this was something her husband had always wanted to do. Their seven year old son sounded as keen as his dad and their five year old daughter seemed happy enough with the idea too. The other family member was a two-year-old boy.

They booked up with a reliable tour guide and set off three days later, The seven year old had become even more enthusiastic and promised his mum that he would deal with all the nasty snakes and spiders for her.

After a grueling seven hour drive, during which time all three kids had been travel sick on several occasions, the family finally arrived at their destination, a lodge in the jungle.

They were greeted by a number of snarling dogs who looked as though they desperately needed a good meal of European children to fatten them up. Mum was immediately panic stricken but Dad and the tour guide reassured her that they were in no danger and the family continued safely towards on to the lodge.

This building was a large, wooden hut on high stilts with a straw roof. Immediately below it, there was a small lake that looked as if it should provide a perfect home for crocodiles. Inside the lodge, accommodation was about as basic as it can get.

Dad was more than happy with everything however and informed the rest of the family that anything more grand would have spoiled the back-to-nature experience. Mum was not amused.

Luckily, only one overnight stay in the lodge was involved. As night fell, the crescendo of jungle sounds increased. Mum laid awake becoming more and more worried about the children who were in the next room. Very soon the jungle noises were accompanied by the sound of the children crying. Dad got up to fetch them, returning with three very frightened children who spent the rest of the night in their parents room. It was just as well, because within an hour a new sound was keeping everyone from going to sleep. Mum and the children listened in horror to repeated loud bangs on the roof-beams accompanied by ear splitting screeches. Dad explained that the source of this noise held no threat for them. It was only monkeys, he informed them but his explanation did little to reassure the rest of the family.

There was little sleep for anyone that night except the two-year-old, who slept fairly soundly after the move to mum and dad's room. Mum found it hard to believe that she slept at all and was relieved when the sun finally rose and shone its light into the room. She untangled herself from under the mosquito net and looked around the room that had seemed so menacing in the dark. But her relief was short lived and her scream awoke the rest of the family. There in the middle of the floor, only a few yards from where she had been sleeping, was a large, tropical spider. It wasn't quite the last ordeal she would face before they left the lodge. Waiting for her in the bathroom were two gigantic tree frogs.

What are Some Great Family Vacation Ideas - 5 Exciting and Adventurous Family Vacations

Has planning another family vacation become the same old, boring, no thrills, dull routine? Are you trying to come up with new ideas to make a family vacation more exciting, memorable, and just a bit different from the more popular family activities?
Here are a few of the not so common family vacation ideas that are full of excitement, thrills, adventure, and adrenaline pumping.

Caving - There are some great national parks and state parks that have an extensive network of caves. The National Park Service lists 81 national parks containing caves in its National Park System. Some caves will have stalagmites and stalactites that have been formed by thousands of years of water dripping. Prehistoric peoples dwelled in some of these caves leaving petroglyphs, the earliest known form of rock paintings.

Spelunking - Very similar to caving, but for the more adventurous. Spelunking involves a more intense exploration of caves by rappelling into the dark recesses of the Earth, and what is known as, black water rafting. Some caves have underground rivers. At times spelunkers need to navigate the cave system on a raft in total darkness with just the lights on their helmets.

White water rafting - Guided and self-guided white water river rafting tours are available on waters for beginners to the extreme white water veteran. Kayaking and canoeing are less intense and are great ideas for families with younger children.

Snorkeling and scuba diving - Snorkel or dive with dolphins, manta rays, or even sharks. Vacation in a tropical port and explore the coral reefs that are full of unusual and colorful marine life. Search for oysters and pearls or treasure from a sunken Spanish galleon from years gone by.

Archaeology excavation dig - Excavation dig vacations can be found all over the world. Archaeology sites can be in caves, in a desert, or even in a jungle. Participants in the digs help researchers uncover artifacts that have not been touched for thousands of years. The fees paid by the vacationers go towards the funding of research, preservation of the artifacts, and publishing papers. Be the first to unearth an important artifact, help in the preservation, and learn a bit of history.

Family vacations do not have to be boring. These great family vacation ideas will provide your family with plenty of excitement and adventure and educational experiences that will be remembered for a long time.

Your family will enjoy the best your vacation destination has to offer.

Travel abroad and immerse your family in the cultures of different countries. Trek to Manchu Picchu along the Incan trail and learn about ancient civilizations that lived long ago. Or perhaps your family would enjoy a patriotic look at the lives and times of our forefathers. A trip to Colonial Williamsburg will educate those interested in American history and memorabilia. Family vacation planning gives you the opportunity to organize your trip to create a pleasurable and entertaining vacation.

Best Places to Visit on California Family Vacation

California family vacations take on various guises. It could be a back to nature trip targeting nature parks and wildlife preserves. Or it could be a fun jaunt from one amusement park to another. It could even be a drive down history lane in search of elusive facts that the history books refuse to detail. Then again, it could be a momentous tour that incorporates all of this and more. The only things certain about a California family vacation would be the enormous element of fun and all pervading sunshine.

As long as there's Disneyland in California and you have kids, the two shall meet, possibly more than once. This would be the unwritten law as far as California family vacations are concerned. Now add Pier 39, Yosemite National Park, Legoland, San Diego Zoo, and Sea World Adventure Park to the equation and it tilts in favour of a tour of the whole State rather than just the South. With that beautiful year-round golden sunshine and silver beaches strewn all along the way, why would any one not consider a California family vacation?

You can take your California family vacation down a path less travelled into lesser known destinations like the Shasta Cascade region with its waterfalls and hypnotising rural charm. The Lake Shasta Caverns and Waterworks Park will be huge hits with the kids. Visit the ghost town in Shasta State Historic Park before you slip down to explore downtown Redding.

The northern region has plenty more to offer for a California family vacation. You should definitely visit the Redwood National Park along the coast to see the majestic red wood trees as old as time. Come down to Mount Lassen with its volcanic peaks, the Sacramento Valley, and move across to scenic Lake Tahoe.

Next stop on your California family vacation is the incredibly unique city of San Francisco. From its majestic Golden Gate Bridge to its famous twisted streets, this is one place that will surprise you with its diversity and sheer liveliness. Hop aboard a street car to visit China town or get aboard a boat cruise to explore Alcatraz. Catch the train to Fisherman's Wharf. This is one town that is fun for the whole family.

Well, when the going gets tough, the kids start screaming. Your California family vacation now gathers momentum as it goes southward to Los Angeles, Anaheim, and San Diego. It's time for that second wind that adds a renewed zest and flavour to your California family vacation. Disneyland in Anaheim is what the kids where waiting for and here it is. This was the promise that kept them on their best behaviour as you took your time shopping and browsing boring museums.
